Make no mistake...

So, we ended up going to the fair this weekend just as I promised the kid. At the time I thought the day's premiere moment of absurdity was when I accidentally stepped in a pile of cow manure while watching the beasts getting their hair cut. However, stepping in cow manure was beat out by the carnival lights blinking madly around one booth's banner proclaiming, "Vote Republican!"

In the news this weekend:

- CNN "The United Nations deserves another chance to prove its relevance," the president said.

Bush said that "enough is enough."

The United Nations must take the actions necessary as a peacekeeping organization to retain its status, the president said.

"Make no mistake about it, if we have to do deal with the problem, we'll deal with it," Bush said.

So, the US is now bullying the UN to start a war which will "prove" that the international organization is "relevant" as a peacekeeping force. Oh, the irony.

- More CNN Democrat Congressman Nick Rahall and three other delegates toured Baghdad hospitals on Saturday and visited sick children, who Iraq says cannot get the medical care they need because of economic sanctions imposed after the 1991 Gulf War.

"My president is serious, there is no question about it," Rahall said, referring to President George W. Bush's threat of military action against Iraq.

"What I want to give here is peace a chance."

Boy, and if the first tactic doesn't work, lets just kill them all slowly and painfully by blocking their ability to medically treat their ill.

- Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri said Friday that Bush's address to the U.N. was "a lot of anti-Iraq propaganda" and contained no evidence Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.

- Morer CNN "If they have no weapons, what are they hiding?" Powell said on CNN's "Late Edition With Wolf Blitzer."

I was going to insert a little comment here, but I believe Araq's Deputy Prime Minister Aziz said it well enough with this:

- "If there is a solution which maintains Iraq's sovereignty, dignity and legitimate rights and prevents aggression, we are ready," Aziz said.

Because we all know that Bush's prime objective is preserving peace, sovereignty and dignity in the Arab world, right? That's why we're seeing articles like this:

- ReutersPresident Bush's chief economic adviser estimates that the U.S. may have to spend between $100 billion and $200 billion to wage an Iraq war...

The past four recessions have been preceded by the price of oil jumping to above $30 a barrel, the Journal reported, citing BCA Research.com in Montreal.

But the White House believes that removing Iraqi oil from production during a war -- which would likely lead to a short-term rise in prices -- would be insufficient to tip the economy into recession.

Yeah, we're safe from recession, all. Just ask the 8.1 million people currently out of work.
